“I’m not them.” She grunted when another contraction hit her, then let out a squeak. “Oh, holy god,” she panted. Sarah leaned her head against Aedan’s chest for a moment, panting, the wave of back-to-back contractions stopping for this brief period of time.
“No you aren’t, you’re stronger than they are.” he said. “You may not remember but you fought through so much worse.”
“Yeah?” she panted, still leaning against her husband, eyes closed, and finally trying to calm before the next wave hit her.
“Definitely.” he said, kissing the top of her head.
The doctor entered the room. “Hi, I’m Dr, Reyez,” he smiled at them. He glanced at teh chart in his hand. “You’re dilated about five centimeters now, Mrs. Ryanne-“
“It’s Dei,” Sarah corrected, looking up at her husband, eyes full of love.
“Excuse me, I’m sorry. Mrs. Dei,” he smiled. “Anyway, right now, we can administer the epidural, so if I can have you turn on your side?”
Sarah nodded, and, with Aedan’s help, managed to turn on her side. She squeezed Aedan’s hands, and closed her eyes.
The doctor called in a tech, who was already prepared. “If I could have you bend your knees as much as possible, and straighten your back as much as possible,” the tech asked, his voice calm and quiet. “Try not to move please, this won’t take long, but we don’t want to risk anything.”
Sarah did as she was asked, and smiled at her husband. She closed her eyes again and winced, squeezing her eyes shut as she felt the major pinch from the needle being inserted. Her mouth opened in a silent scream, then she closed it tight. She forced herself to remain still.
Aedan smiled softly and her. “You’ve got this.” he murmured. He kissed her forehead as she was being given the epidural. “I love you.”
